DeviantArt, there are a couple of reason why such huge site is going down little by little. Let's talk about them. They are mentioned at completely random order, for I do not think one is worse than the other, and let's help these people get their stuff right before trying to proclaim themselves as "artists."
-Artistic Nude Vs. Attention Whore-
Enough said, this is an artistic nude: baineann.deviantart.com/art/Si… so is this: www.deviantart.com/art/Nude-63… Light was carefully checked, the angle is proper, no excessive manipulation was done on the photo, and more importantly, the model is natural, genuine, and graceful, and shares a feeling or emotion with the viewer.
One thing is the display of a human body in a position that expresses something, be it a release from social pressure, a passion, or some form of love and genuine relaxation. In other words, feelings and emotions. Another completely different thing is posing naked and showing your breasts for the (pardon me) sake of copiously preposterous attention. Now I shall give the former a poetic response as it summons, and to the later I shall give a vulgar reply such as they have earned.
Artistic nude: Thank you for spiritually releasing your soul through imagery of your earthly shell, giving us, viewers, a sense of comfort and warm acceptance.
Attention whore: Put away your tits, bitch, there are 7 billion humans in the world and little more than half have them prettier than you. Fuck off.
One thing is enjoying a certain product, and another completely different thing is being a total fanatic. You see, there are anime conventions, or videogame conventions. This is because those are genres on their own under which many smaller products fit. For example, I declare myself guilty of being a great fan of Fullmetal Alchemist, Hellsing, Black Lagoon, and Monster. However, i would go to anime conventions to find them, not to specific "Fullmetal Alchemist Convention" or the "Hellsing Convention." I will give your gray matter some credit and assume you get my point. Being that the case, why is there a "My Little Pony" convention all on its own? Should it not be there more of a "Lauren Faust Convention" or "Cartoon Convention" in which you could find MLP products among others? Why dedicate the entire thing to it just by itself? And this carries on, leading to DeviantArt being filled up with pony pictures. Today, I cannot google "Edgar Allan Poe" without finding some stupid pony version of him. Want proof? Enjoy: www.deviantart.com/art/Edgar-A…
Is Edgar Allan Poe not the epitome of depression and darkness while My Little Pony is the maximum symbol of joy, sweetness and happiness? How in the world do you relate those two? It is, bluntly said, MORONIC. Nothing can be googled without finding a pony version of it, and most of these stupid pony drawings come from Deviantart. It is too much, people, it is far too much. Just among the first 3 sets of results in "What's Hot" in Deviantart I could find this: cogbrony.deviantart.com/art/Vi… and this kelisah.deviantart.com/art/Big…
The worst part is that bronies focus their art on ponies ONLY in most cases, harshly limiting their own artistic development and profusely flushing talent down the toilet.
Bronies, I will be honest with you. You're stupid and you need to get your shit together.
Same story as with Bronies, only slightly more depraved. I am not against furry art, I must say, for being so would be a major act of hypocrisy. This is because furry characters and shows were part of my childhood, including Looney Toons, Banjo-Kazooie, Star Fox, etc. However, it does indeed annoy and disgust me when they are sexed up.
Unlike in the bronies' case, I do somehow respect furry artists a little more since they have a greater variation than just ponies with gigantic heads and cloying eyes.
-Extremely Fat Ladies Fetichists-
This has a more personal connotation, I admit, but I cannot help finding these disgusting pictures of exaggeratedly and inhumanly over-sized, over-weighted women. I believe in the beauty of both thin and chubby girls, I cannot deny that, but there is a limit that divides beauty from disgust.
No matter how hard I look for it, beauty simply does not seem to be willing to be found on that picture. Plus, a woman who goes fatter than the former example I presented loses her beauty, for she is not pretty enough inside to be willing to take care of her health. Even the chubby pretty girl I displayed might have some health problems due to excess of fat, such as diabetes and high risk of heart attack. Now imagine that typical American absolutely rounded blond red neck... no, just no.
Okay, I have expressed my concerns with this site. It is way too full of these four elements. I would mention anime and manga artists but I believe these styles simplify anatomy and can train artists to learn better perspective techniques. As long as one does not get stuck on that style forever, everything should go fine. Yet, as I said, it is a simplified and stylized version of reality, so it is, in fact, a lower form of art. Art nonetheless, and honestly, I like it better than some of the higher forms of illustration due to how stylish and dynamic it manages to be. Nonetheless, this does not keep my eyes closed to the harsh reality.
DeviantArt has become a site for crappy illustrators, I am afraid. You could say that DeviantArt is missing the "Art" part of its name by now, with few exceptions here and there.
I agree with you 100%. Although I'm rarely ever faced with obsessively fat people or nudes, I'm constantly surrounded with ponies and furries. I like furries to an extent. The ones that look cute, usually only ones on IMVU. Ponies are just so.... not unique in any way. There was one girl I was talking to and she was mad no one ever read or liked her things. and it was just one thing, pony related material. I asked her if she had any other interest and she said no. That's why she wasn't that popular is because she didn't have wide interest. It gets annoying after a while but that's why I fill up my watched groups with anime, traditional, digital, realistic or other interests that I have and shy away from involving anything that will clutter me with ponies and everything else. I must say its been working good. I have noticed things have really slowed down lately in the amount of material being shared in different groups I'm in. You can never be too sure exactly why, though.
My theory as to why before all of us could draw like crap and still manage to grow an audience in past years (I know I did at least) and now we can technically go pro and catch no attention is all I typed above. People only see those things along with our usual few good artists (the ones everyone watches). This kills opportunities for creative minds out there, going unnoticed because people is not even willing to notice anymore. Well, that's what happens with DeviantArt, I don't mean to say that's the entire world's situation, you know?
Though over YouTube we have a different situation: Let's Players and gaming channels seem to be getting all the attention now, artists such as Rona Project or the Briman are being left behind to watch people play videogames. I don't mean to seem like I'm blaming them for my apparent lack of popularity on YouTube, in fact, I love watching a good and fun let's play occasionally (being Markiplier, Vanossgaming and The Crew my favorites), but the attention for them went actually too far now, honestly.
Well, anyway, people say I am intolerant asshole, but really, I don't mind if you like ponies, fetishist German porn or gory execution videos as long as you don't focus your entire life on it. You can like My Little Pony and I'm cool with you, but if you draw nothing but ponies and watch nothing but pony-related bullshit, then you have a problem, because I will mock you, and you will be offended, and you won't understand that I just mock you because your obsession annoys the living shit out of me. So yeah, there's that.
So, basically, excesses are bad, that's partly the message here. Let's get some more variation and we can get a more active DeviantArt community like the one we used to have. Otherwise, keep uploading naked sluts, ponies, sexed-up furry, ridiculously fat women, Adventure Time fanart (apply here what I said about ponies, that's been ridiculously abundant too), etc. and let this site die by the minute.
I agree with you that people need to expand their artistic interest. But who are we to tell them what to do and not to do? I say just let it go and try not to let it bother you that bad. Do like I do and stick yourself in your own little world. :3
